Meditation is a very simple process: all that you need to know is the right button. The Upanishads call it "witnessing" -- the right button. Just witness your mind process, don't do anything at all. Nothing needs to be done, just be a witness, an observer, a watcher, looking at the traffic of the mind-- thoughts passing by, desires, memories, dreams, fantasies. Simply stand aloof, cool -- watching it, seeing it, with no judgement, with no comdemnation, neither saying, "This is good," nor saying, " This is bad." Don't bring your moral concepts in, otherwise you will never be able to meditate.

Meditation can bring you to your nature. It can help you to drop all the perversions. It can make you intelligent, it can make you loving, it can make you spontaneous, it can make you responsible. It can make you a benediction to yourself and to existence. Except meditation there is no other method which can help. This is the key, the master key.

You are at home; you never left it. When this is discovered, one becomes a Buddha, one becomes a Christ, one becomes a Krishna . This is your destiny.

Patanjali is rare. He is enlightened person like Buddha, like Krishna , like Christ, like Mahavira, Mohammed, Zarathustra, but he is different in one way... They are great founders of religions. They have changed the whole pattern of the human mind and its structure, but their approaches are not scientific. Patanjali is like Einstein in the world of Buddhas.

...The innocence of the children is ignorance, it is not true innocence... Real innocence belongs to the Buddhas.

The innocence of the child is bound to be corrupted, but the innocence of the sage cannot be corrupted anymore--he has passed through that stage. His innocence has maturity, his innocence has integrity; his innocence is earned-- he deserves it.

The greatest work for sannyasins is to keep the message pure, unpolluted by you or by others-- and wait.

Lao Tzu has given it a beautiful name, wei- wu- wei, action through inaction. That's the paradox of creativity... In Japan or in China , the whole art of calligraphy is done on rice paper, on a certain very sensitive paper, very fragile. If you hesitate a little, for centuries it can be known where the calligrapher hesitated-- because more ink spreads into the rice paper and makes it a mess. It is very difficulit to deceive on rice paper. You have to go on flowing; you are not to hesitate. Even for a single moment, a split second, if you hesitate-- what to do?-- you have missed, already missed. And one who has a keen eye will immediately say, "It is not a Zen painting at all," because a Zen painting has to be a spontaneous painting, flowing.

When you are self- conscious you are really showing symptoms that you don't know who you are. Your very self- consciousness indicates that you have not come home yet... We are just leaves on a tree, a great tree-- call it God, or the whole, or you name it, but we are small leaves on an infinite tree of life. There is no need to fight. The only way to come home is to surrender.

To be a creator means you drop the very idea that "I am separate from existence." Creation happens only when you are one with existence. Creation happens only when you are in tune with the creator that there is no disturbance from your side. And the greatest disturbance comes from the ego... Ego means the idea that "I am separate." And if you think you are separate you are living in a lie -- and creativity flows out of the experience of truth...

"...Meditation: the process of moving from mind to no-mind, from thought to a state of thoughtlessness, silence...

...How to be in present? -- that is the whole knack of meditation. And the moment you are in the present, enlightenment is its by-product...

... Meditation can be translated as no-mind; things will be simple. Either something comes out of the mind, or something comes out of no-mind. Mind is noise, it is craziness, insanity. No-mind is silence, health, wholeness...

...Zazen means just sitting at the very source, not moving anywhere. A tremendous force arises, a transformation of energy into light and love, into greater life, into compassion, into creativity. It can take many forms. but first you have to learn how to be at the source. Then the source will decide where your potential is. You can relax at the source and it will take you to your very potential. Gibberish is to get rid of the active mind, silence to get rid of the inactive mind and let go is to enter into the transcendental...

...Witnessing simply means a detached observation, unprejudiced; that's the whole secret of meditation. It is simple! Once you have known the knack of it, it is most simple thing in the world, because each child is born in that innocence. You have known it in your mother's womb, you have known it when you were a small child, so it is only a rediscovery. Meditation is not something new; you have come with it into the world. Mind is something new; meditation is you nature, it is your nature, it is your very being. How can it be difficult? You just have to know the knack: watch...

...Meditation can bring you to your nature. It can help you to drop all the perversions. Except meditation there is no other method which can help. this the key, the master key...

...Meditation will not give you enlightenment, remember. No technique can ever give you enlightenment; enlightenment is not technical. Meditation can only prepare the ground, meditation can only open the door. Meditation can only do something negatively; the positive will come. Once you are ready, it always comes...'

"... I would like to make all the scientific arrangements in the temples of meditation, where your violence, anger, anxiety, tension, insomnia--why all these states originates and how these states could disappear. This will be the negative part of meditation to throw out all the repressed garbage from you. Once the garbage is out, then it is easier to enter within.

... There are one hundred and twelve techniques of meditation to realize the ultimate. And all these techniques will be available for first time to experiment at one place. Moreover suggestions and guidance will be available too. If one technique is not helpful then another can be tried or third one and so on. We do not want to disappoint anyone from here. Certainly one can find right technique to experiment and to enter within. We would like to give extensive and scientific basis to all one hundred and twelve techniques. And we would like to create such temples of meditation not only in big cities of this country but all over the world.

... A remarkable thing has happened in the human history that the rich countries like America got all the facilities, but are full of anxieties, impatience and hopelessness then those countries which are not getting food, shelter and other facilities. These poor countries are still hoping that if they become like America then they will be happy. But now we are disillusioned in every way. We have to return to Buddha, Krishna , Christ, Mohammed because they said again and again that even if you get all the outer richness then too you will not feel inner peacefulness. We could not understand them because their sayings seem to us imaginary and utopian. And those who were saying if you get outer richness then you will be happier and peaceful, but

these people failed utterly too. It is a humor of the human history that those who were imaginary and utopian are now proving themselves more practical!

But religion cannot return back by the old routes. Now new scientific and technological routes should be find out.

In the past a yogi used go to Himalayas for the meditation because coolness and less gravitation is useful in meditation. But now there could be a air-conditioned meditation hall in the Bombay and there is no need to go to Himalayas . We could get the same coolness and same gravitation here.

In future through science and technology all the facilities could be made available in these temples of meditation. Their names may be temples otherwise these will be laboratories to utilize all the researches so far available to enter into mediation.

Suppose a person who has a high blood pressure cannot enter into mediation then his blood pressure could be controlled, so that he could meditate.

Light, balanced diet with suitable calories, vitamins and other elements could be arranged, so that more awakening, more meditative space could happen. If right sleep is there then it is faster to enter into meditation. If right sleep is there then you are more relaxed and aware.

It is now possible to analyze waves of dreams and deep sleep. And there is relationship between anxiety & dreams and deep sleep & meditation. I would like to make available all these scientific and technological help in these temples of meditation.

And at present humanity needs more meditation because human being is more unhappy, more impatient, full of anxieties, full of anguish etc.

These temples of meditation will be for those who would like to experiment, meditate, celebrate and live life joyously with love.

Translated excerpts from a Hindi discourse of Osho

"...Mind can exist only in one way -- in running, always running after something, but always running. In the running is the mind . The moment you stop, the mind disappears. Right now you are identified with mind. The only problem is being in the mind. And the only solution is to get beyond mind. I call it meditation...

...The mystics in the East have never bothered too much about the mind; they have developed methods to bypass the mind. Those methods are the techniques of meditation -- they are just to bypass the mind. Once we have bypass the mind, once bird's-eye view of your own mind, things start settling..."

...It was certain reason that mystics called meditation 'no-mind' because if you call it meditation, again the mind makes a goal out of it..."
